What is ayran? It is a really simple yet fantastic drink! For me, this creamy yoghurt drink is an everyday staple, super easy to make, and something I grew up with in my homeland, Bulgaria.
I had a fantastic childhood. I keep my warm memories of long sunny summer days, playing outside with my friends, roaming around the neighbourhood, and even being far away from home. Ah, you would give everything to have just one day from my childhood again, wouldn’t you?
When I returned home, I first drank something—water, compote, or ayran straight from the fridge. I didn’t know then why I felt so good drinking it, but as kids, it’s more about listening to what we were craving – as our bodies ‘talking’ to us and usually for the most needed thing.
Today, I can understand—ayran’s tangy, lightly salted taste quenches thirst, satisfies hunger, and rebalances the electrolyte balance.
Made with my homemade yoghurt, this gluten-free and naturally probiotic drink is perfect for balancing gut bacteria and maintaining hydration, especially after exercise or a sauna session. This simple yoghurt-water mixture is the base of Bulgarian tarator – again a very fresh, cold summer soup.
However, this extremely easy citrusy mint electrolyte will satisfy you if you are after something tropical and refreshing.

Ayran is one of the world’s oldest and simplest functional drinks — a blend of yoghurt, water, and salt that has refreshed shepherds, soldiers, and travellers across the Balkans, Turkey, the Middle East, and Central Asia for centuries. This historical Ayran drink has left a significant mark worldwide.
Ayran (pronounced EYE-run in Turkish) dates back thousands of years and is believed to have originated among Turkic nomads in Central Asia. They fermented milk into yoghurt for preservation and later diluted it with water and salt to create a cooling drink suitable for long journeys and hot climates.
