Yogurt Garlic Dip Recipe – Easy and Ready in 5 Minutes

This creamy, tangy homemade yogurt garlic dip recipe is super easy to make. Simply grab yogurt, garlic, lemon, olive oil, and dill, and you’ll have this aromatic sauce ready in almost no time. Mix it in minutes, dip or drizzle it on wraps, patties, roasted vegetables, and more, and enjoy!

This garlic yogurt sauce is the simplest sauce you’ll ever make. In fact, it’s so simple that it is a 5-ingredient, 5-minute recipe and the base of a few other delicious recipes on my blog. But, what’s the best – you won’t need any fancy equipment – no food processor or blender!

Actually, this is a Greek tzatziki without squeezed cucumbers and lemon. Also, this is an incomplete Tarator, a cold Bulgarian and Balkan summer soup, just add cubed cucumber, walnuts, and some water. It’s as simple as it sounds, but it’s super delicious and a staple in our regular meal rotation.

This sauce is a fantastic accompaniment to many recipes. If you are looking for yogurt garlic sauce for kebabs, look no further. It goes well with chicken souvlaki or chickpea patties. Don’t forget to add this aromatic garlic sauce dollop to my Bulgarian-style moussaka – yummy!! The list could be endless…

Why You Will Like This Yogurt Dip Recipe?

  • Gut-Friendly: Yogurt garlic sauce is gut-friendly thanks to the probiotics in yogurt and the health benefits of garlic. Yogurt, especially with live cultures, provides beneficial bacteria for a healthy gut microbiome. Garlic contains compounds that support the growth of these beneficial bacteria and act as a prebiotic. Spot on for your gut microbiome!
  • Quick and Easy: This yogurt dill dip recipe is simple and quick, requiring just a few basic ingredients. No cooking is involved, making it easy and hassle-free.
  • Customizable: You can easily adjust the yogurt garlic dip with your favorite herbs, such as coriander, mint, and jalapenos. I prefer dill, but it’s totally up to you what to add to make the dip more herby. It’s highly versatile, serving as a cool, savory dip for a variety of dishes.
  • Easy to scale up or down: This yogurt garlic sauce recipe is ideal for busy days when you need a quick, flavorful sauce. You can make a small batch or prepare enough for a party—it takes under five minutes.

Yogurt Garlic Dip Recipe Ingredients

Plain Yogurt – of course! In this recipe, I use my homemade Bulgarian yogurt. If you have already come across my blog and have made your yogurt with my recipe, you know that this yogurt is runnier than conventional Greek yogurt.

So, if you want the yogurt sauce to be thicker than the one you have with your Doner kebab, you should strain the yogurt. If using Greek yogurt, this step is not necessary.

For a creamier dip, use full-fat Greek yogurt. If you have dietary restrictions on full-fat, use low-fat; it still turns out delicious.

Garlic – distinctive aroma and savory bite. Not to mention its health benefits – supporting heart health, boosting the immune system, and potentially helping to manage blood sugar levels. These benefits are primarily attributed to its rich content of sulfur compounds, particularly allicin, as well as other bioactive components.

Peel and grate the garlic in a garlic grater or grater mate. I got mine as a present from a very dear friend, thank you, Helen, and have used it regularly since. I kind of like the aromas left on my fingers when grating stuff on the plate: garlic, ginger, turmeric, etc.

Extra-virgin olive oil – The yogurt’s lightness enhances the olive oil’s flavor. You can use any extra-virgin olive oil, but ensure you choose the best available.

Dill – Fresh dill is the best option, but I always keep dried dill available as well. As long as the dried dill isn’t too old, it works effectively in recipes. Well, it’s not the end of the world if you use dried dill; you can omit it if you prefer.

Top tip: Dill freezes exceptionally well. You can buy it when it’s on sale, then wash it, chop it, and store it in a freezer bag for fresh dill on hand whenever needed! However, omit dill if you don’t like it.

Salt – A key ingredient. I prefer pink or sea salt.

Yogurt Garlic Dip Recipe Variations

  • Make it vegan. Ensure you choose an unsweetened vegan yogurt with no added sugar. Various plant-based yogurts are available, made from ingredients like coconut, soy, and cashews. Try several to find your favorite!
  • Add fresh herbs. Stir in 2 tablespoons of chopped leafy herbs for a refreshing kick. Fresh cilantro, parsley, basil, and mint would all work beautifully here.
  • Use roasted garlic. For a deliciously mild garlic taste, try swapping fresh garlic for one clove of mashed roasted garlic. Adjust to find your perfect flavor!
  • Add a citrusy hue. Use lime juice or lemon for a different flavor profile. I love this variation on Greek chicken souvlaki. If you like, add a little lime zest for a stronger lime flavor.

Yogurt Garlic Dip Recipe Step-by-Step Instructions

This dill yogurt garlic dip is quick and easy to make, which is one reason I enjoy it.

1. Prepare the yogurt. Strain in a mesh cloth for 1 hour, or omit this step if using Greek-style yogurt.

2. Chop the dill and grate the garlic.

3. Add the yogurt and salt to a bowl.

4. Drizzle the olive oil and mix well.

5. Leave it covered to rest for half an hour in the fridge or use it immediately.

6. Enjoy!

Dani’s Tips

Use fresh herbs. Whatever you choose to make your yogurt garlic dip herby, pick the freshest possible. When buying fresh herbs, make sure they are bright green, and none of the fronds are turning yellow. To preserve fresh herbs for longer, freeze them! Simply wash and chop them, then store them in a sealed zipper bag in the freezer. It will remain usable for several months.

Pick high-quality olive oil. High-quality olive oil, especially extra virgin, is known for its superior flavor and beneficial compounds, such as antioxidants and polyphenols. These compounds can lower the risk of heart disease, reduce inflammation, and improve cognitive function. Additionally, they enhance the flavor of your yogurt, garlic, and dill sauce with their fruity, peppery taste.

Use a good-quality yogurt. I recommend sampling a few different yogurt brands until you find your favorite. Also, it’s cheaper and super easy. Give it a try, making your own homemade yogurt from scratch! It won’t disappoint, I promise!

Store leftover sauce (it almost never happens in my home, lol) in an airtight container in the fridge. It keeps well for up to five days. However, it’s a great meal prep if you make a bigger batch – there is a week’s worth of sauce to dip your deliciousness in.
