Health Benefits of This Avocado Mousse Recipe :

No doubt, avocados are one of the most versatile superfoods out there, and for good reason. Ripe avocados provide a rich buttery base that lends a luxurious creaminess to the mousse. They are also packed with incredibly healthy fats, very high in dietary fiber, and essential nutrients.

I can’t suggest an avocado substitution for this recipe, as incorporating avocado into a mousse enhances the texture. Further, the avocado flavor is subtle, allowing the rich cocoa and vanilla to take center stage. My guests never guessed that there was an avocado in this fluffy dessert. Challenge your friends and see yourself 😉

Bananas add natural sweetness. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t like bananas, and you? These sweet, yellow natural gifts are packed with essential nutrients, including potassium, vitamin C, and dietary fiber, which support heart health and aid digestion.

In this dessert, they not only add natural sweetness so you won’t need to add any sugar, but they also enhance the mousse’s smooth consistency. Moreover, bananas provide a subtle, fruity flavor that pairs well with rich cocoa, making the pudding both delicious and nutritious.

Raw Cocoa Powder is highly nutritious. This bitter powder is derived from the Theobroma tree, which is rich in antioxidants, particularly flavonoids, which support heart health and reduce inflammation. Cocoa also contains minerals like magnesium, iron, and zinc.

Although cocoa powder is a fantastic superfood, it should be consumed in moderation. Because cacao contains theobromine, a natural stimulant, consuming too much can lead to jitteriness or sleep disturbances, similar to consuming too much caffeine – more about cocoa read here – Cocoa: More Than Just Chocolate.

Almond milk is used in small amounts in this recipe, helping blend the other ingredients smoothly. I use my homemade almond milk, which is free of additives and preservatives. However, you could replace it with any plant-based milk or even water.

How to Make This Easy Avocado Mousse Recipe

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients
Firstly, slice the ripe avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a blender or food processor. Peel and add the bananas to your blender as well.
  2. Blend It Smooth
Secondly, add the vanilla extract and plant-based milk. I use homemade Almond Milk Blend on high until the mixture becomes velvety and smooth. The key here is to blend until no chunks of avocado or banana remain, creating a mousse-like consistency.
  3. Chill
Finally, transfer the mousse into two serving bowls or glasses and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes. Note! If you prechill bananas and avocado, you can skip the step of refrigerating and enjoy them immediately. Otherwise, the chilling process helps the mousse firm up, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
  4. Serve with a chunk of dark chocolate, a sprinkle of cocoa powder, or fresh berries for a pop of color and added freshness.

Tips for the Perfect Avocado Mousse

  • Ripe Bananas Matter: For the best flavor and natural sweetness, ensure your bananas are fully ripe, with brown spots on the peel. This will enhance the sweetness and improve the mousse’s smoothness.
  • Chill Time: While diving in immediately is tempting, letting your mousse chill for at least 20 minutes really elevates the texture. If you have more time, leave it in the fridge for up to an hour for an even firmer consistency.
  • Add-Ins for Extra Texture: For some extra crunch, consider topping the mousse with chopped nuts like almonds, walnuts, or hazelnuts. Alternatively, shredded coconut or cacao nibs can add a delightful contrast to the silky mousse.

Notes

Pick perfectly ripe ingredients: Make sure the banana and avocado are perfectly ripe. A ripe banana will have a few brown spots on the peel, indicating maximum sweetness, and a ripe avocado will yield to gentle pressure.
Blending gradually: For a silky-smooth consistency, start by blending the avocado and banana, then gradually add the cocoa powder to avoid clumping and ensure it’s evenly distributed. Pour the milk at the end and keep blending for a minute.
Adjust sweeteners and flavor: If you want to enhance the mousse’s flavor and balance its sweetness, add a pinch of salt. A small amount of vanilla extract can also make the pudding even more delicious. For added sweetness, try adding maple syrup or honey. Or, if you prefer a bitter taste, just like me, add melted dark chocolate. You don’t need to blend this; simply stir, and that’s it!
Serving suggestions: Add berries, strawberries, extra cocoa powder, a dollop of your favorite plain yogurt, or sprinkle a few chopped nuts for crunchiness. Yum!!
