My Personal Touch
What is ayran? It is a really simple yet fantastic drink! For me, this creamy yogurt drink is an everyday staple, super easy to make, and something I grew up with in my homeland, Bulgaria.
I had a fantastic childhood. I keep my warm memories of long, sunny summer days, playing outside with my friends, roaming the neighborhood, and even being far from home. Ah, you would give everything to have just one day from my childhood again, wouldn’t you?
When I returned home, I first drank something, water, fruit compote, or ayran straight from the fridge. I didn’t know then why I felt so good drinking it, but as kids, it’s more about listening to what we were craving – as our bodies ‘talking’ to us, and usually for the most needed thing.
Today, I can understand that ayran’s tangy, lightly salted taste quenches thirst, satisfies hunger, and rebalances electrolytes.
Where Ayran Drink Comes From
Ayran is one of the world’s oldest and simplest functional drinks; a blend of yogurt, water, and salt that has refreshed shepherds, soldiers, and travelers across the Balkans, Turkey, the Middle East, and Central Asia for centuries. This historical Ayran drink has left a significant mark worldwide.
Ayran (pronounced EYE-run in Turkish) dates back thousands of years and is believed to have originated among Turkic nomads in Central Asia. They fermented milk into yogurt for preservation, then diluted it with water and salt to create a cooling drink suitable for long journeys and hot climates.
While Bulgaria is often associated with the well-known Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Ayran has been called Turkey’s national drink and is deeply rooted in its culinary heritage.
Today, it’s a staple in Turkey, Bulgaria, Iran (Doogh), and Afghanistan (Dugh), each with subtle variations in texture and flavor. Ayran represents more than refreshment; it symbolizes the balance of nature: fermented dairy (life), water (purity), and salt (vital minerals), all combined in an Ayran drink.

Why Ayran Drink Is the Perfect Gut-Friendly Hydration Choice
Ayran is a naturally isotonic drink, meaning it balances body fluids and electrolytes without added sugars or artificial flavorings. The yogurt provides probiotics, calcium, and B vitamins, supporting gut flora and muscle function.
Sea salt contributes sodium, a vital electrolyte lost through sweating. It helps maintain blood pressure and hydration levels, making Ayran an ideal drink after workouts.
Regular consumption may:
- Support digestion and gut microbiome with the help of an Ayran drink.
- Aid recovery after exercise or dehydration.
- Help maintain electrolyte balance.
- Improve skin health through better hydration.
Ayran Drink Ingredients
- 300g Greek or homemade yogurt
- 300ml filtered water, add more or less, depending on taste
- pinch or two sea salt (to taste)
How to Make Ayran at Home – The Easiest Electrolyte Drink Recipe
The best part here is that there is no recipe.
In a blender or a whisking jug, combine yogurt, water, and salt. Blend or whisk until frothy and smooth. Or simply pour water into a jar along with yogurt in a 1:1 ratio, put the lid on, and shake it vigorously.
Taste and adjust the salt or consistency; traditional Ayran is slightly thinner than drinkable yogurt. Pour into glasses and serve immediately, optionally garnished with fresh mint or ice cubes, to create your ideal Ayran experience.
Tips for the Perfect Ayran Drink: Texture and Flavor
- Use Bulgarian or Greek yogurt for a rich texture in your Ayran drink.
- For a lighter version, use sparkling water.
- Add crushed mint or dill for a refreshing twist.
- Consume immediately; it’s best freshly made.
